FOR INSTRUCTORS Subject Pool Contact Information Research Coordinator: Cynthia Forman-Zimmerli E-mail: psychsp@notes.cc.sunysb.edu Phone: 632-7027 Room: PsyB 154 FOR FALL AND SPRING INSTRUCTORS: What courses must include a research participation requirement? Fall and Spring Intro Psychology (103) courses must include a 5 credit research participation requirement. For all other psychology courses, it is up to the instructor to decide whether to include this requirement or not, as well as how many credits they would like to require. What if a student is taking two psychology courses, both of which require research participation? For all students taking a fall or spring psychology course which requires research participation, individual requirements must be met. There can be no overlapping of research credits between psychology courses. (in summer however, credits can overlap) How do I incorporate this requirement into my grading system? Simply add a research requirement to your syllabus. Shortly after classes end, the subject pool coordinator will e-mail you a list of your students names and how many research credits they have earned. For Psy 103 students, those who have not met the required amount of credits will lose 1/3 of a letter grade off their final grade. For all other psych classes besides Psy103, instructors will decide how this will affect a students grade. Please be sure to include this information in your syllabus. FOR SUMMER INSTRUCTORS: What courses must include a research participation requirement? Traditionally, all summer psychology courses have included a research participation requirement. It is up to the individual instructor as to how many credits their course will require, but it is suggested that you require between 3 and 6 credits. Why should I include a research requirement in my summer course? The act of being a participant in a research experiment has proven to be a very educational experience for students. In addition, including a research requirement in your summer course will keep the Subject Pool running for you and your colleagues! What if a student is taking more than one psychology course during Summer Session? In summer, students taking more than one Psych course MAY OVERLAP their credits. They don't have to fulfill separate requirements. However, research participation credits can not roll over from Summer I to Summer II. What if the students feel that there is not enough time to meet this requirement? There should be plenty of time as long as the students begin early. Please tell/remind your students that if they wait until the end of the term to start signing up, there are not enough experiments to go around for all the last-minute rush of people. All the slots fill up. It is very chaotic for students. They should get started EARLY (especially in short summer session). How do I incorporate this requirement into my grading system? Please see the answer in the Fall/Spring section. What else is important for my students to know about the research participation requirement? GETTING A PENALTY: So that they don't overlook this rule, please verbalize to students that if they schedule an appointment and then just don't show up, they will get a penalty (a negative credit). Tell them to read the instructions about canceling. Getting BANNED from SONA SYSTEMS: If any student accrues 4 or more penalties on their account, they will have their access to Sona Systems removed for the remainder of the semester. They should be debriefed at every experiment, to learn about the purpose of the study. No alternative experiments will be given during the final 5 days of class. Those requiring alternatives for age, language, or moral reasons should schedule times for alternatives before the last week of class. If you have any further questions about Subject Pool Participation, please direct your questions to the Subject Pool Coordinator.
