·
Development of aggression and defiance in infancy,
preschool, and early elementary-school-age children
·
Gender differences in the development and maintenance
of aggression
·
Parental influences on the development and maintenance
of externalizing behavior problems
·
Relations between the felt
“aversiveness” of child behavior problems and parents’ responses to those
problems
·
The relations between children’s
responses to interparental conflict and behavior problems
·
Relations among different types of dysfunctional
discipline and how they function both separately and together to predict child
behavior problems
Current projects:
·
Meta-analysis of the relation between children’s
responses to interparental conflict and their internalizing and externalizing
behavior problems
·
Micro-analytic observational study of the relation
between Lax and Overreactive discipline and how they influence and are
influenced by different types of child misbehavior and negative affect
·
Micro-analytic observational study of the relation
between “do” and “don’t” commands and child compliance, and how co-occurring or
immediately preceding misbehavior or negative affect influences this relation
·
Maternal ratings of the “aversiveness” of various
child behavior problems, and the relation of those ratings to actual child
behavior problems, maternal discipline, maternal negative affect, and child age
and gender.
·
Treatment development study examining the
effectiveness of a parenting program including an anger management component
Advice for applicants:
·
You will work very closely with your advisor and their
research interests will ultimately shape your own. Make sure you apply to work with people whose
research genuinely interests you.
·
Apply to lots of places; you can narrow it down later.
·
If you know you don’t want to attend a particular
school, don’t fly 3,000 miles to interview there.
·
You can live anywhere
for four-five years.
