Extracting information in interviews goes both ways. So its not just faculty pumping the candidate. Faculty members are trying to make good impressions too. The faculty members that interview you have an agenda; you should have one too! Dont just look up questions online to ask. Be original! Person interviewing you has to believe that youre interested in the answer sell it like its coming from you. Sound sincere rather than articulate; although you do need some level of articulation But even if youre being sincere, dont sound clich. Dont have to memorize CV of faculty but it doesnt hurt to know about the person/what they do and how it relates to you but even if you know the faculty members research, dont come off as a know-it-all. (E.g., why didnt you measure this variable this way?) You have to think about why you are interested in that field. Make interviewers understand the context (e.g., I had this great opportunity to get involved in research. Even if I didnt have my own study, I learned a lot from running subjects etc.). Show that youve collected enough data on yourself that youre ready for graduate school. (Show them here are the things that Ive done to make sure that Im ready). Advice: Talk to the people in the program if you can (such as graduate students) Practice interviewing. Anticipate questions and rehearse (try to have someone who has done interviews interview you) Note: Dr. Gerrig is willing to do this if you email him. The hardest thing to do during the interview will be to listen because youre nervous. Faculty likes students that appreciate faculty Resume Give your resume to 5 people and let them be witheringly honest (e.g., Look over my resumeand tell me EVERYTHING you think I should change.) Building a case on what you want to do Your resume wont pick up the slack for things that are wrong with your application Faculty spot checks to see what youve done Its obvious when resume is padded If you feel you havent done enough, maybe you should wait a year. If the kinds of experiences you have are relevant, they should be on your resume. Things that arent relevant should be more down played. Highlight skills that are odd (e.g., NOT Microsoft Excel, Word, Powerpoint are not odd) Advice: Use your resources (e.g., professors that are writing your recommendation or graduate students in your department) Doesnt matter if your resume has GPA on it, since they see transcripts anyway (but sometimes it helps to be straightforward) Question: If you have lots of experience, what do you put on the resume? Answer: Your resume should tell a story. If it starts to look like you were confused, thats bad. You want to give a sense of making wise decisions with both your interview and resume. 8:CJKUYtu% ' 5 6 7 $ % ] ;xddR#h8Z?hE0J5CJOJQJaJ&hEhE0J5CJOJQJ\aJ&hEh[0J5CJOJQJ\aJhE0J5CJOJQJaJ&h[h[0J5CJOJQJ\aJh[0J5CJOJQJaJh8Z?0J5CJOJQJaJ&h8Z?h[0J5>*CJOJQJaJh[0JCJOJQJaJ h@ih[0JCJOJQJaJKUu7 % & ] f a Z ` & Fdgd8Z? & Fdgd8Z? & Fd[$\$gd8Z?d[$\$gdE$a$gd[] ^ e v $ % & , \ ] Z ^ e f ` a Ǹۅ۩ǩt`L&h8Z?hE0J5>*CJOJQJaJ&h8Z?h8Z?0J5>*CJOJQJaJ hE0J56CJOJQJaJh8Z?hE5CJOJQJaJ&hEhE0J5CJOJQJ\aJh8Z?0J5CJOJQJaJhE0J5CJOJQJaJ&h8Z?hE0J5CJOJQJ\aJ#h8Z?hE0J5CJOJQJaJ#h8Z?h8Z?0J5CJOJQJaJYZoq _`nMXʸ|m^M<+< h8Z?0J5CJOJQJ\aJ h=,0J5CJOJQJ\aJ h=,0J5>*CJOJQJaJh=,0J5CJOJQJaJh8Z?0J5CJOJQJaJ&h=,hE0J5CJOJQJ\aJ&h=,h=,0J5CJOJQJ\aJ&h8Z?h=,0J5CJOJQJ\aJ#h8Z?h8Z?0J5CJOJQJaJ#h8Z?hE0J5CJOJQJaJ&hEhE0J5CJOJQJ\aJhE0J5CJOJQJaJ&M3Xgd[d[$\$^gd=, & Fd[$\$gd=, & Fdgd=, & Fd[$\$gd8Z?d[$\$gd8Z?os{|X_`ȴ h[hSG&hEh=,0J5CJOJQJ\aJ&h=,h=,0J5CJOJQJ\aJ h8Z?0J5CJOJQJ\aJ h=,0J5CJOJQJ\aJ)h8Z?h=,0J5>*CJOJQJ\aJ21h:pSG/ =!"#$% j 666666666vvvvvvvvv666666>6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666H666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666662 0@P`p2( 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p8XV~ OJPJQJ_HmH nH sH tH J`J SGNormal dCJ_HaJmH sH tH DA`D Default Paragraph FontRiR 0 Table Normal4 l4a (k ( 0No List `^`` [ Normal (Web)ddd[$\$CJOJPJQJ^JaJ*W`* [Strong5\PK![Content_Types].xmlj0Eжr(΢Iw},-j4 wP-t#bΙ{UTU^hd}㨫)*1P' ^W0)T9<l#$yi};~@(Hu* Dנz/0ǰ $ X3aZ,D0j~3߶b~i>3\`?/[G\!-Rk.sԻ..a濭?PK!֧6 _rels/.relsj0 }Q%v/C/}(h"O = C?hv=Ʌ%[xp{۵_Pѣ<1H0ORBdJE4b$q_6LR7`0̞O,En7Lib/SeеPK!kytheme/theme/themeManager.xml M @}w7c(EbˮCAǠҟ7՛K Y, e.|,H,lxɴIsQ}#Ր ֵ+!,^$j=GW)E+& 8PK!Ptheme/theme/theme1.xmlYOo6w toc'vuر-MniP@I}úama[إ4:lЯGRX^6؊>$ !)O^rC$y@/yH*񄴽)޵߻UDb`}"qۋJחX^)I`nEp)liV[]1M<OP6r=zgbIguSebORD۫qu gZo~ٺlAplxpT0+[}`jzAV2Fi@qv֬5\|ʜ̭NleXdsjcs7f W+Ն7`g ȘJj|h(KD- dXiJ؇(x$( :;˹!
