What Research Assistants Do
Over the past 10 years We have been privileged to work with one of the Univerisity's most vauable resources- undergraduates. Each semester we recruit an average of 75 undergraduate research assistants (RAs) to assist on all aspects of our group's research projects.
RAs learn observational coding (we currently have four active coding systems), manage data systems, recruit participants (see Random Digit Dialing), and run participatns' through various portions of the protocal. They are also trained in cold-calling, basic clinical interviewing, and following human subject ethical guidelines.
RAs have helped us succeed in ways taht would be almost insurmountable without them. For example, the amount of staff time and econimical resources it would require to complete all of our projects on time would mulitple significantly. Over the past 10 years the RAs have completed over 500,000 calls, helped to run over 1,000 families.and have coded over 20,000 hours of family iteractions.
As a small token of our tremendous appreciation for all of their hard work, time, and most of all dedication, we try to make thier experience in our lab as fulfilling as possible. Besides the behind the scenes look at the lifecycle of a research project, we also offer a chance to interact with departmentla faculty, an interdiscplinary staff, and gradaute students. Our goal is to provide them with a srong foundation in behavioral research and lend support for whatever avenue the RAs may wish to purseu in their own academic or working careers
