I joined the Family Translational Research Group in the summer of 2005 as a clinical doctoral student. I came to Stony Brook to work with Drs. Heyman and Slep because I wanted the opportunity to work on large-scale research projects investigating different aspects of conflict in families, especially how violence in the family impacts children. I received my undergraduate psychology degree from the University of Florida in 2001 before working for a year in the child welfare system in Pensacola, Florida. Both experiences fostered my interest in partner violence and child maltreatment and I decided to pursue my M.A. at San Diego State University in 2003 to learn more about these phenomena. I loved my time in San Diego, working with the LONGSCAN group for my master’s thesis and enjoying the surf and sand in my spare time. I feel very fortunate to have joined this lab because not only do I get to study the issues that are important to me, but I also have a wonderful group of energetic and intelligent people to share the experience with me!
