What is going to happen inside the scanner?

1. We will put you on a MRI bed and secure your head with pillows (to prevent head movement). At this point, please try to get as comfortable as you can, because we will need your cooperation to refrain from any head movement once scanning starts. Just imagine you wouldn't want someone to move while you are taking a photo of them, except we are taking many pictures during the scan.
2. You will be positioned in the middle of the scanner tube. We can communicate through an intercom at any time if you need to talk. We will be communicating with you throughout the scanning.
3. Scanning sequence:
a) Scan basic brain structure (less than 5 minutes)
b) Scan a set of brain structure (less than 8 minutes)
c) Quick scan of functional images. You will notice the scanner noise changed to a higher frequency and pitch (less than 1 minute)
d) Functional scans. You will be performing behavioral tasks while we are taking pictures from your brain. Depends on the experiment. Usually repeat 5 to 10 times (each about 5-10 minutes).
e) Final structural scans (about 8-25 minutes)

Is that the whole experiment?

That is all that will happen inside the scanner. Before each scanning session you do some paper work and we will give instructions and a bit of practice for what you will be doing in the scanner. After the scan you might need to complete a short post-scanning interview and you may ask any additional questions you have about the experiment at that time.

What happens if I need to cancel?

Please be very sure that you can make it to the time you are scheduled. The scanning slots are very expensive and we have to pay for them whether or not you show up. We understand that unforeseen things happen. Please let us know as soon as you can (2 days minimum) before the scan date if you cannot make it.
